On Music Genres

Expanding on my entry about punk as ethic vs genre, I’ve never been one to be able to really care or understand musical genre. Some of my friends are very much into this, study it, and know all the classifications. And its amazing to learn what all of these different types of music are called.

But to me, knowing it, or studying it, is almost like an autopsy. There is a coldness to it. Something about the act of classification, deadens the music, to me.

I’m sure genre is important looking back, but as a music maker in the present that is always looking forward, these labels tend to make absolutely no sense to me at all, and seem limiting.

So despite making a lot of music, there are many areas of music, I’m totally ignorant to.

And I’m comfortable with that.
