D.I.Y. House For Feral Cats

Since moving into my apartment, I’ve come to know 6 cats feral cats. Last year, we lost two during the cold. I don’t know if they found new homes, or passed away. But they were old. I like to think someone let them inside and they have a good life.

My neighbor has been feeding these cats, and with the cold weather approaching, asked if I knew anything about outside shelters. I did some research, and came up with a little box design,

it measures about 36″ (w) x 22″ (d) x 22″ (h)… can’t remember exact dimensions…

We started with 3/4″ plywood for the walls and floor, with a 2×4″ frame for the base, used silicone to seal the interior edges up tight…

…then lined it with 1″ Styrofoam sheathing, and 1/4″ plywood for the inside walls…

…to keep weight down, I made the roof arches with 3/4″ ply, on top of a 1/4″ plywood base, then put in styrofoam sheathing, and covered it in 1/4″ plywood…

…framed out a door…

…I coated the exterior of the box in outdoor black paint, then an exterior latex, then the roof parts in a rubberized black spray. The interior was covered in Killz, then a semi-gloss interior latex (easy to clean). The Killz stage is shown here…

…As this was going to be an outside house, I then put down shingles…

…Then I put in some vinyl tile for the floor. When I was done, it was pretty heavy. One of the features is a lift off roof for easy cleaning, and though it’s a bit cumbersome, The roof was easy to lift off.

To use it, you just put some bedding in, and thats pretty much that. I would like to get a door for it, but I think that may scare them away from it. I hope this will help keep them warm this winter.
